Are you overdue for some routine maintenance?

When starting a new relationship you are so excited about your new love that you spend all of your time thinking about the other person, you are excited to do even the most mundane task together because you are together, and everything is great when you are together. But, as the relationship goes on, the excitement wears off a little bit, life gets busy and before you know it your loved one is in need of a little TLC from you to keep the relationship running smoothly.

Your hot tub is no different. When you first get your new tub, you are so excited. You keep the water crystal clear, you keep up with all of the routine maintenance because you just love anything that has to do with your hot tub. But the longer you own your hot tub and the busier life gets, you find your hot tub might need a little TLC to keep it running smoothly for you. So how do you know when your tub is overdue for maintenance? You trust your senses.

Your Nose Knows

One of your first clues that your tub needs a little TLC could just be your nose. If something smells a bit off, it probably is.

Musty Smell

When you open the lid of your hot tub and are hit in the face with a musty smell, it could be that you don’t have enough sanitizer. Adding a little bit should correct the problem.

Chemical Smell

Other times, you open the cover and immediately smell a chemical aroma, that is an indicator that you have too much chlorine in your tub. Adding sanitizer can correct this problem as well.

It is important to remember that you aren’t treating the smell. The smell is just an indicator of a problem that needs to be addressed.

Your Eyes Can See It

You can’t always smell the problem, but if your nose isn’t detecting it, your eyes probably can. Several hot tub problems can actually be seen with the naked eye.

Cloudy Water

If you are seeing cloudy water, it is a good indicator that you need to check your filter. It could just be loose, but it is likely that it either needs to be cleaned or totally replaced. If your filter is good, but your water is cloudy, it could be that your water is overly saturated with chemicals. In that case, adding a clarifier can help to bring back that crystal clear water.

Foamy Water

It is not uncommon to occasionally get foamy water in your hot tub. Foam in your hot tub means that your water has too much residue from soap, lotion, and body oils.  You will want to correct this by adjusting your PH. If you can’t get rid of the foam by adjusting the PH, you will need to drain your hot tub, clean it and start again.

Green Water

When your water starts looking a little green, you can be sure that algae is present. Algae thrives in water with high PH levels so you will want to add PH down to create an environment that is hostile to algae. Just remember, if all else fails, you should simply drain, clean and refill your tub.

Water maintenance really isn’t as complicated as it seems. Your senses will tell you when something is wrong and with this helpful guide, you will be prepared to correct it and get back to enjoying your hot tub.
