3 Things to Consider Before Situating Your Hot Tub

After thinking about 3 things to consider before situating your hot tub, this couple decided to place their hot tub outside within some rocky landscaping.

When you decide to get a hot tub, you probably have the perfect place in mind. Maybe you want it next to your pool so you can easily switch between the two, or next to your back door so you don’t have to walk too far. Before you make a decision though, you need to make sure it’s actually a good place for your hot tub, because it won’t be easy to move. Here are 3 things to consider before situating your hot tub.

Indoors or outdoors?

The first decision you need to make when deciding where to situate your hot tub is if you want it indoors or outdoors. Many people choose to have their hot tub outdoors, but there are pros and cons to both.

If your yard isn’t suitable for a hot tub, indoors is a great option. When your hot tub is indoors, you also don’t have to worry about the weather — you can use it whenever! Nothing is worse than getting out of a nice, warm hot tub into the cold.

However, outdoor hot tubs are great as well. Not everyone has space indoors for a hot tub. It’s also a great way to keep an eye on your kiddos playing while you relax at the end of the day. You also don’t have to worry about possible water damage to your home when draining and changing the water.

Does your placement have enough support?

When you take an empty hot tub, fill it with hundreds of gallons of water, then add people, it gets heavy. So, you need to make sure there’s enough support. For outdoor hot tubs, HotSpring recommends sitting it on a 4 inch concrete slab. For indoor hot tubs, you will want to consult a structural engineer who can determine if your house can handle the weight.

Will your hot tub fit?

Hot tubs don’t come in pieces — wherever you want your hot tub, it’ll have to get there somehow, in one piece. So will your hot tub be able to make it to your dream location?

If you want your hot tub outdoors, the installers will likely unload it in your driveway and move it to where you want it. Be sure to consider:

  • Is there enough room for them to unload it in the driveway?
  • If you have a fence, is the gate wide enough?
  • Is there anything in your backyard, like furniture or a swing set, that will be in the way?

You may be offered the option of a crane to install your hot tub if it can’t get there otherwise. However, to save that additional expense, try to choose a spot that’s easily accessible.

If you want your hot tub indoors, you will also want to consider if there’s enough room in the driveway, as well as if the hot tub will be able to fit through your doors. If the answer is no, you may need to consider situating your hot tub outdoors.
