Why is a hot tub cover important in Texas?

Cowboys, Longhorns, the Alamo … Texas is known for a lot of things, but cold temperatures isn’t exactly one of them. So if the temperatures don’t get too cold, why do you need to worry about a hot tub cover? There are actually several reasons why a hot tub cover is important, no matter what climate you live in.

It’s Not That Warm

Temperatures in Texas are typically quite enjoyable, but it certainly doesn’t stay in the 80’s or 90’s all year long. Any time the air temperature is cooler than the temperature in your hot tub, your cover is at work, keeping your water nice and toasty. Even a difference of a few degrees between air and water temps makes your hot tub heater work harder. Keeping your tub covered with a well-insulated cover keeps your costs down.

It Keeps The Debris Out

It’s important to leave your cover on, even when the temperature is warm. After all, your cover also works to keep out unwanted debris. Even if your hot tub is in an area free from trees, you can still get bugs and other organic matter in your tub that will throw off the water chemistry. One might argue that any old cover will work for this, but making sure your cover has a proper seal is the only way to keep your water as clean as possible.

Excessive Sunlight Causes Algae Growth

Need another reason to keep that cover on? Excessive sunlight creates a breeding ground for algae. Your cover protects your water from hours of unnecessary sunlight – starving algae from the sunlight it needs to grow.

The Cover Can Collect Water and Mildew

Since you are using the cover to keep the water clean, to keep sunlight out and to keep the water warm, it’s important to have a good cover that’s properly maintained. If the seams are not properly sealed, the insulation quality will be inferior. Seams that aren’t sealed will also let water into the cover, creating a perfect environment for mildew to grow. Your cover can quickly become waterlogged which keeps it from having any insulating quality, causing your heater to work over time. Investing in a high-quality, well-sealed cover – and properly maintaining it – will keep these things from happening.

So in short, yes a quality hot tub cover is important, even in Texas. If your cover has seen better days, we can help. Come by and see us at Texas Hot Tub Co. Our staff would love to help you find the perfect cover for your hot tub.
