Safety Tips for Kids in the Jacuzzi®

Now that your spectacular spa has been delivered and installed, it’s time to plan your first ever family day in your hot tub! A Jacuzzi is the perfect place to spend some quality time with the whole family. And, like every other sensational activity you do together, you want to make sure your kids are safe. When it comes to the well being of your youngsters, keep these safety tips for kids in mind the next time you get the family together in your Jacuzzi®.

Cover On, Kids Out

Do you have some tiny explorers on your hands? If your kids are always looking for an adventure and you have some concerns about leaving your hot tub unsupervised, having a good-quality, locking hot tub cover is a MUST. You can find hot tub covers with locking mechanisms that come with a separate key, preventing even the smartest whippersnapper from figuring out how to unlock it. If you’d like an extra barrier just for safety measures, you can build a locking fence around your hot tub, which also provides some privacy as a surprising bonus.

Knee High to a Grasshopper

While hot tubs are fantastic fun for older kids, it’s not recommended for children 5 and under. Kids younger than 5 have thinner skin and a harder time regulating their body temperature. Another consideration is the height of your young ones. When they sit down in the hot tub, their upper body, from the shoulders up, should be above the water level. They should also be able to stand on the bottom of the spa and their head be out of the water.

Keep It Cooler

When you have the whole gang together, you can enjoy your hot tub longer with the kids when you turn the temperature down. If you have your hot tub set to 104 degrees, younger children should only stay in the Jacuzzi for about 5 minutes. But, when you have your spa temperature a little lower, like 100 to 102 degrees, older kids can enjoy a longer soak time.

Drain Safety

Remind kids to keep a safe distance from the drain. This prevents hair, bathing suits, and jewelry from having issues. It’s also wise to teach your kids how to shut off your Jacuzzi per your user manual’s instructions in the event of an emergency. You should never leave children unsupervised.

Talk About Your Safety Tips for Kids

It never hurts to sit down with your family and discuss your safety tips for kids in the Jacuzzi®. Challenge each member to come up with their own water safety rule for everyone to follow. This gets the ball rolling for your kids to start considering water safety, not just around the hot tub, but swimming pools as well.
