Is there a Right Way to Add Chemicals to Your Hot Tub?

Test strips, pH levels, and measuring chemicals for your hot tub on a weekly basis can leave you feeling like a mad scientist. But good and complete hot tub maintenance is necessary. Not only does it keep your hot tub safe to use, but it also helps protect your hot tub from component damage, scaling, or other service needs, all while increasing its longevity. So, what is the right way to add chemicals to your hot tub? While some methods or personal preference may vary, there are necessary steps every hot tub owner should follow. Here are a few ways to get water care and chemicals right for your hot tub.

Add the Right Chemicals to Your Hot Tub

You want to select the best chemicals that will balance, sanitize, cleanse, and enhance your spa water. At Texas Hot Tub Company, we carry only exceptional and proven brands that our customers love such as Silk Balance®. SpaGuard®, and the SoftSoak Trio®, among others.

When it’s time to add the chemicals you’ve selected, start by testing the water. Then balance the pH and alkalinity. Next, add your sanitizing chemicals and clarifiers directly to the water. Finally, retest the water to ensure all levels are where they should be. Here are a few other tips for adding chemicals to your hot tub:

  • Run your jets to help evenly mix the chemicals throughout your spa.
  • Your hot tub should be heated to at least 80 degrees to most effectively dissolve and disperse the chemicals.
  • Add your chemicals one at a time and wait 15 to 20 minutes between each one.
  • Keep your hot tub cover off for 15 to 30 minutes afterwards to let the chemicals breathe.
  • Don’t guess at the correct amount of chemicals to add; measure everything!
  • Wear gloves when handling hot tub chemicals.

Make adding the right chemicals even easier by signing up for auto-ship delivery with Texas Hot Tub Company. With this convenient service, we will ship your BioGuard® or SpaGuard products right to your home every four to six months, depending on your hot tub needs. No more running out or remembering to get more on your way home!

Make (and Keep) the Right Maintenance Schedule

Just as important as adding the right chemicals is adding them consistently. We recommend you test and balance your hot tub water on a weekly basis. This is easiest to do if you reserve the same time in your schedule each week to do so, making it a habit. Falling behind, skipping weeks, or forgetting regular hot tub care can damage your hot tub and lead to costly repairs.
