How to Care for an Infrared Sauna

If you’re looking into getting a sauna, you probably have a lot of questions. Is a sauna right for me? Which sauna is right for me? How do I take care of it? The amount of information you find online can be overwhelming. Let’s briefly cover how to care for an infrared sauna to relieve some of those concerns.

Saunas are hot — do I really need to clean it?

It’s true. Infrared saunas use infrared heat, and that heat is going to kill a lot of bacteria and germs. So, you may think you don’t need to clean your sauna because it does the job for you. But, that’s not the kind of cleaning we’re talking about when we talk about caring for your sauna.

Instead of thinking of your sauna like a hot tub or pool that needs sanitizing, think of it like a piece of furniture. You don’t really try to kill bacteria on your furniture, right? You just get the crumbs and dust off it, and if you’re having guests over, polish it. This is the same kind of concept with a sauna. You’re not going to go in there with a bottle of Lysol® to clean. You’re going to go in with a duster and vacuum.

Do I need special equipment?

When you first go to clean your sauna, you don’t need any special equipment. You can just use the duster and vacuum you already have on hand to clean your sauna. There’s no special “sauna duster” or “sauna vacuum”. Like we said, it’s not a pool or hot tub; it’s a fancy piece of furniture.

That being said, once you’re done dusting and vacuuming, you will want to use a special sauna cleaner to polish your sauna. It may seem like you can just get whatever wood polish you use for the rest of your household, but it’s important to get a sauna-specific wood cleaner. Your sauna wood is exposed to heat and other factors that the rest of your furniture is not exposed to, and this cleaner will help protect it.

How can I keep my sauna clean?

If you want to keep your sauna clean so you don’t have to clean it as often, it’s pretty simple. Just rinse off before you get in your sauna and sit on a towel. You track all of the dirt and debris into your sauna, so if you rinse off before, you’ll eliminate some of that. And if you sit on a towel, you’ll not only be comfier, but your seats will be cleaner. It’s a win-win.
