Yes, Hot Tub Maintenance is Different in Winter

Is your hot tub ready for the winter season? The coldest months of the year tend to be the busiest for your hot tub. So what can you do to properly prepare your HotSprings Spa for all the use it’s going to receive?

Keep up your maintenance schedule

A hot, bubbly soak in your outdoor hot tub is relaxing any time of year, but on a cold winter night, breathing in the fresh air while the water warms your body is an experience like no other! And if the cold weather has you feeling under the weather, the combination of the heated water and jet massage increases circulation and relieves muscle tension while the steam loosens congestion. No wonder some say that the colder months are the best time of year for hot tubbing.

All hot tubs require maintenance and standard care all year long. However, you do need to spend little extra time preparing for the cold, and/or freezing conditions.

  1. Continue your regular inspections and maintenance to make sure your hot tub is running correctly, and the water level is not too low.
  2. Always clear your hot tub cover of ice, snow, or other debris before opening.
  3. Even if you aren’t using your spa during the winter, continue testing the chemical levels.
  4. Do not drain your Hot Springs Spa if it is not working correctly. Contact your local dealer for service and assistance on the proper instructions for placing a space heater or light inside the access door and putting a heavy blanket over the door to prevent the hot tub from freezing and/or to thaw any ice build-up. Use extra caution with the space heater so it does not make direct contact or come to near anything that could melt or burn.

Winterization of a quality built hot tub is not always necessary unless you plan to be gone for six-weeks or more, or someone will not be available to continue the weekly maintenance.  For information on winterizing or de-winterizing your hot tub, follow the directions found in your hot tub’s owner manual.
