Before you hit the gym

You will actually want to start your hot tub use before your workout session. If you are preparing for an intense workout, you will want to head to the hot tub about 20 minutes before your workout. Your soak will be the start of your pre-workout warm up because it will literally warm up your muscles. As you know, starting a workout with cold, stiff muscles is just asking for injury.

The heat of the hot tub will also increase your blood flow and circulation so you are totally ready to start your workout. If you want to kick things up a notch, try completing some of your stretches in the water to really loosen up your body. Now that you’re all warmed up you can start your workout with increased mobility and increased performance ability.

Post-Workout Hydrotherapy

Once you’ve completed your workout you’ll actually want to avoid the hot tub for a little while. You’ll want to do a “cool down” and then stretch to reduce the lactic acid that has built up in your muscles. At this point you should actually head to a cold water bath. A hot tub will keep your muscles warm, while cold water will constrict the blood flow to your muscles. This will lead to reduced swelling and faster muscle recovery.

After your cold water soak, you are then free to enjoy your hot tub. Adding hot water to your recovery will reduce muscle spasms, and create a softer muscle tissue. As always, the hot tub will relieve joint stiffness, improve circulation and ease muscle tension. Following this post-workout routine will bring you faster workout recovery and increased performance in your future workout sessions.
