Should I Install a Deck Around My Swim Spa?

So you’ve decided to get a swim spa, and now it’s time to decide where to put it. You have your whole backyard to choose from, but you really want it kind of close to your house. You think, “Can I put my swim spa on a deck? Or should I install a deck around my swim spa?” The deck would give you a great gathering space when you’re done using the swim spa, and would keep it close to your house. So what are your options?

Install Your Swim Spa On Your Deck

If you already have a deck, it may seem like a no-brainer option to install your swim spa on it. While this is possible, it is more complicated than you may think. You will have to have a contractor come to your home and make sure the deck is sturdy enough to hold the swim spa when it’s full of water and people. If it’s not sturdy enough, you’ll have to pay to reinforce it before your swim spa is installed. If you install it without reinforcement, the best case is your swim spa gets damaged. The worst case is that someone gets hurt.

Install Your Swim Spa Next to Your Deck

If you already have a deck but don’t want to reinforce it, an easy solution is to put your swim spa next to it. All you have to do is get a concrete pad to install it on, get rid of the deck railing, and extend the deck so it surrounds 3 sides of your swim spa. You’ll want to leave the far side open in case the swim spa needs to be serviced.

Once your swim spa is installed and your deck is extended, you can add safety railing again around the edges of your deck. This will give you the look you’re going for without having to completely rip up your deck!

Install Your Deck Around Your Swim Spa

If you don’t already have a deck, it’s really easy to install one around your swim spa. Like installing your deck next to your swim spa, your contractor will just build the deck around it. However, you can completely surround the swim spa with decking instead of just 3 sides. Since there’s not an open side, though, you’ll need to allow for at least 3 feet of space around at least one side of your swim spa for servicing. This can be underneath your deck, or you can use removable decking panels if you don’t have space underneath. Some people even fill the space with storage they can move when it is time for servicing. The choice is yours, as long as you leave the space open.
