Develop a Sauna Routine to Improve Sleep

Getting plenty of sleep at night is incredibly vital to our health. However, many people struggle with insomnia for a variety of reasons. There are several treatments to address insomnia, but one of the best ways is by using a sauna before bed. Anybody can develop a routine with their sauna to improve their sleep. However, saunas can be especially helpful for those struggling to get a good night’s rest. Whether you want to try to avoid prescription drugs or suffer from chronic fatigue, a sauna is certainly a great alternative treatment to help you get the sleep you need.

Why saunas help you sleep

Saunas help you sleep because their radiating warmth relaxes your muscles. When you are stressed or anxious or suffering from hormonal imbalance, it can be hard for your muscles to relax. This prevents you from sleeping. If you are tense, then your mind will inevitably be alert as well, even if you are exhausted.

However, when you take a few minutes in a sauna, the warmth will help your tense muscles relax, and this will cause your brain to release endorphins that not only make you feel good physically, you’ll feel better emotionally. All in all, saunas will help you to destress before bed, which in turn will help you sleep.

When and how to use your sauna to promote sleep

The best time to use your sauna to help you sleep is as you’re getting ready for bed. Drink plenty of water about two hours before your session, then step into your sauna for about 15 minutes. According to the blog post “Sauna Routine to Improve Sleep and More Health Benefits” on the Finnleo® sauna website, this 15-minute session in your sauna before bedtime will “…raise your body temperature to the right degree range for promoting muscle relaxation and sleep-inducing response.”

After your session, put on your jammies, brush your teeth, and hop into bed. Instead of looking at your phone or watching television, consider reading a paperback book or a favorite magazine instead, as digital devices disrupt sleep patterns as well. Avoid drinking any kind of alcohol right before bed as well. Instead, if you do plan on having a glass of wine or mixed beverage, have it at least two to three hours before you plan on heading off to bed.
