How to Stay Hydrated in a Hot Tub

Your mother, your doctor, and your ninth grade science teacher were all right. Water is very important for your health. After all, our bodies are mostly made up of water. It’s the stuff of life. But when you’re relaxing with your family by the pool or in the hot tub it can be very easy to get preoccupied and forget to do the basic things needed to take care of yourself. How do you know when your body needs to be hydrated?

Don’t Wait for Thirst

You shouldn’t be waiting until your tongue is swollen and your lips are cracking before you take a sip. If you’re thirsty then your body is already trying to tell you that it needs some water. Most people go by the old belief of “8 glasses a day”. That’s not a bad idea. And if you spend a lot of time in the Texas sun you might need a little more.

But what if you’re just hanging out? What if you’re having a lazy day relaxing in the hot tub? Do you need water then…even if your body is soaking in water?

Hot Tub Hydration

Yes! You’re not going to soak it in like a sponge so you’ll still have to get your water the old fashioned way. And even though you’re not doing anything physical you have to remember that you’ve got your body submerged in water that is up to 104 degrees. That temperature can dehydrate you at a faster rate. It’s a good idea to keep a bottle of water within reach while relaxing and take a drink every few minutes.

There are some other ways that you can be sure to get the amount of water that you need when you’re having a hot tub day. Have a fruit tray close by. Snack on some orange slices and grapes. They have high water content and can contribute to your hydration. You can also try adding some flavors to your water or drink things like lemonade or sports drinks.

You can also remember at installation to try and put your hot tub somewhere that gets a little shade if you plan on using it in the middle of the day. Or put up an umbrella or awning to block some of the sunlight.

And remember that if you’re drinking anything with alcohol you’re going to get dehydrated more quickly. So make sure you drink a little water between cocktails.
