When you move into a new house, you spend hours rearranging your furniture until you find that perfect balance of functionality and eye appeal. You want your outdoor space to have that same balance, but you can’t exactly move your hot tub all around the yard until the location is “just right.”
It’s important to get the placement right the first time. But that’s not always an easy task. However, with a little preparation and forethought you can make sure that you get your hot tub in the perfect place, right out of the gate.
Logistical Considerations
Structural Support
One of the biggest things you have to consider is structural support. Depending on the size of your hot tub you could need to support nearly 6,000 lbs when your tub is full of water and people. You can’t put that amount of weight just … anywhere.
It’s recommended that you place your hot tub on a minimum 4-inch, level concrete slab. If you’re planning to put your hot tub on an existing deck, you’ll need to have the deck inspected to see if it can support the weight.
Drainage
For cleaning purposes your hot tub will need to be drained a few times a year. You need to make sure that the area where you place your hot tub has decent drainage so the water doesn’t settle around the hot tub and compromise the structure underneath. It’s also likely there will be some water overflow or at the very least, splashing and dripping that happens around your hot tub. You’ll want the area to be somewhat waterproof and not overly slippery when wet.
Delivery Access
You’ll also need to think about delivery access. Your ideal spot will be a no-go if you can’t get the hot tub there. It’s rare that a location can’t be accessed, but it does happen. It’s more likely that limbs will need to be cut or fence taken down, but delivery access is definitely something that needs to be taken into consideration.
Electrical Access
You’ll also need to make sure that you can get electricity to your hot tub, and have a designated outlet. You will also need to be able to access all of the pumps and electrical components of your hot tub. It can’t be closely surrounded on all sides without some sort of plan for accessing the components.
Aesthetics
Privacy
When it comes to positioning a hot tub, privacy is important. Whether you’re trying to enjoy a moment of solitude or a romantic evening, you’ll want to have some level of privacy. You can certainly add privacy after the fact, but taking it into consideration when you’re placing your spa will make adding that privacy easier.
Eye appeal
It’s possible that after all of the other considerations, your placement options may be a bit limited. However, you’ll still want to think about eye appeal. You’re making a major investment and it should be a focal point of your outdoor space. Even if your tub is tucked away somewhere it should still be located in a place of beauty.
The View
Last but not least … the view. You’ll want to have something beautiful to look at while you’re soaking. Whether it’s beautiful gardens, rolling hills or simply the stars, make sure you have a gorgeous view.
