How Much Does a Hot Tub Affect Your Bills?

When it comes to our monthly bills, we all love to save money. We turn off the heating and A/C and open our windows in the fall and spring. We make sure to turn off light switches when we leave the room, and we always unplug the coffee pot before we go on vacation. So it’s natural to question how much adding a new hot tub to your backyard will affect your utility bills. Great news! It’s not as much as you think!

Power it Up!

Running your spa requires power, and while the effect it has on your bills may vary, you can expect it to cost you about $1 a day. Energy efficiency has come a long way in the last few years and the newer hot tubs average about $23 a month. You can easily spend $200 for just one day at a spa treatment, so having the option for a full body massage every day, all day, is well worth the investment.

Water it Down!

The average hot tub holds 400 gallons of water, some will hold more and others less. Once you fill up your spa, that’s the end of your water cost for the next 3-4 months. At least until it’s time to be cleaned and refilled. To find the additional monthly cost of filling up your hot tub, multiply the tub’s capacity by the number of times you refill a year. Then, divide that total by 12. Multiply that number by the cost per gallon.

So, a 400-gallon hot tub cleaned 4 times a year, with your water cost at 0.2 cents a gallon would add less than 30 cents to your water bill a month.

Keep it Healthy!

Just like people should get regular check-ups, so should your hot tub. You’ll need to purchase chemicals to keep your spa water healthy and balanced. This cost will also widely vary depending on how much your hot tub is used. It will also make a price difference as to which brand of chemicals you choose to use. However, you can expect to spend around $10 to $20 a month.

After you average out the monthly utility costs to run your hot tub, it’s easy to see how much cheaper it is to have an in-home hot tub versus making trips to the spa or massage therapist. At Texas Hot Tub Company, we have an excellent selection of high-quality hot tubs, just waiting to be enjoyed by you. Schedule a free test soak and find the perfect spa to bring home today.
