Improved cardiovascular health, reduced risk of Alzheimer’s, stress relief, better sleep, glowing skin; the list goes on and on. These are all benefits that you will experience from “regular sauna use.” That phrase pops up a lot when you read about the health benefits of a sauna. It is clear that the phrase means more than once but what is “regular sauna use?” How long should you sit in a sauna and how often? You want to make sure that you are sitting in your sauna frequently enough to experience all of the wonderful things your sauna has to offer.
How Long Should I Sit in a Sauna?
The length of time that you sit in your sauna is not necessarily a set time. It is usually suggested that you sit in a sauna for however long it is comfortable for you. Most people can only tolerate the increased level of heat and humidity for around 15 to 20 minutes. When your body starts showing signs that it has had enough, you should get out of the sauna. Drink some water and allow your body to return to its normal temperature. Once your body has reached its normal temperature you are welcome to return to the sauna for another session. However, that’s not necessary to achieve the desired results. Whatever your reason for using a sauna, 15 to 20 minutes is an ideal length of time to enjoy your sauna.
How Often Should You Use Your Sauna?
How often you should sit in your sauna is a totally different question. There is not one set frequency that covers all benefits. Generally speaking, the more days out of the week that you use your sauna, the better the benefits will be. For example, a study of “regular sauna use” shows that using a sauna just 2-3 times a week can reduce your risk of heart attack by 27%. When the frequency of sauna use is increased to 4-7 days a week your risk is reduced by 50%. Many other studies show that maximum benefits are reached by sitting in your sauna 4-7 times a week. Of course, once you realize how good the sauna makes you feel, you will WANT to enjoy your sauna every day!
Essentially any sauna use is better than none at all, but the more you enjoy your sauna the greater the benefits will be.
