Fire Safety Tips for Your 4th of July BBQ

July 4th BBQ

Family. Friends. Food. Fun. There’s nothing better than a day of backyard barbecuing and explosive light-up fun! Gather all the people you love, relax in the backyard or by the lake, and grill up your favorite BBQ foods. Then, finish out the day watching those gorgeous displays of firework-splendor above. But don’t forget to plan for safety for your family and your guests as you head into Independence Day weekend. Here are three fire safety tips for your 4th of July BBQ.

Check Your Grill

Before firing up the grill, especially a gas grill, check for any damage and gas leaks. According to the National Fire Protection Association, gas grills are the primary cause of 8,900 structural fires each year – with peak times happening in July. Check for leaks, breaks, or cracks in your gas line or grill to prevent unneeded injuries. Then, fire up the grill to cook up your favorite brats, ribs, steaks, burgers, and sides. It will be so delicious, your guests will want to return for your epic backyard BBQ year after year.

First Aid

From sparklers to hot grills, the 4th of July is set up to be a day for safety vigilance – especially when kids are around. The National Fire Protection Association reports that 39% of grill burns happen to kids under the age of five. Plan for good child supervision, as well as fun activities to keep the kids away from the grilling area while you are cooking. Lawn darts, horseshoes, giant Jenga, playing in the pool, or in your incredible Endless Pools® Fitness System are all excellent ways to keep the kids occupied until it’s time to eat. And keep a first aid kit on hand for any booboos.

Extinguish Danger

Extinguish fire danger before it even starts. One of the best safety tips we have is to be proactive. Make sure your lawn has been sufficiently watered in the days leading up to your Independence Day celebration. Having a fire extinguisher on hand will also help ensure that you can quickly douse any issues that may arise.
