Can a Hot Tub Overheat?

You’ve loved the cooler days of winter spent relaxing in your serene backyard spa. The days are getting brighter, the birds are singing, and the warm rays of sunshine are beckoning you into spring. There’s only one problem. You’ve noticed that your hot tub is getting hotter than normal. Can a hot tub overheat? Is that even a real thing? Well, sometimes, yes.

“Feeling hot, hot, hot!”

Overheating should not be a normal issue for a new, well-maintained hot tub. Usually, problems with overheating happen for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that the hot tub is old. New models have special safety features that automatically turn your spa off if the temperature exceeds 112°F. Older models may have lived life to the full and overheating is one way that they are telling you it’s time to let them rest in peace.

The next issue is from actual external temperatures. When the weather warms and temperatures rise to over 100 degrees, you don’t want to be heating your hot tub like you would on the coldest day of winter. Your hot tub is designed to produce and retain heat. But sometimes, that can happen a little too well when the temperature outside the spa is also high. Adjust your spa settings to lower the temperature, and you should be just fine.

Finally, failing to maintain your hot tub correctly can cause your spa to overheat. Low water levels, dirty filters, and other issues can cause internal temperatures to rise.
