Dance class, ball games, work, friends, social media; with all of the things competing for your attention, your family often takes a backseat. You take for granted that they will always be there. The fact of the matter is that your kids are growing up and won’t be around forever. Although it can seem impossible, finding a few hours of uninterrupted family time should move to top priority. We have put together a list of 7 surprising ways to bring your family closer than ever.
Everyone has to eat. That makes dinner a great opportunity for family time. Even if you don’t have time to cook dinner, you can still grab some take out and meet up around the dinner table. Dub the dinner table a tech-free zone, yes even for Mom and Dad. Making family dinners a priority, at least a few times a week, is a sure fire way to help your family feel more connected.
It may seem “old fashioned” with all of the video games that are available today, but breaking out a deck of cards or a beloved board game is a fun way to connect with the family. If you can’t get the kids away from the video games, join them in their games. Have a family tournament or simply ask your child to teach you to play. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy a glimpse into their world.
Volunteering together is a great way to multitask. Your family will get to spend extra time together while giving back to the community. Volunteer hours look great on your student’s college application and working together for a good cause makes everyone feel great!
Take a Day Trip
Finding time for a weekend getaway is hard, so why night plan a day trip? Jump in the car and head out, for a day of spontaneous fun. Stop at the random tourist traps around your town. Try a new restaurant or drive out to no man’s land in search of the perfect view. The point is not where you go, but the fact that you are doing it together.
Enjoy the hot tub
Hot tubbing is an unexpected, but totally enjoyable family activity. Whether you simply relax and talk or plan an activity like games or a movie night, everyone will love the hot tub!
Have a Family Meeting
A family meeting may not sound overly enjoyable, but they are what you make them. Start by leaving a note for everyone inviting them to the meeting. Schedule the meeting for late in the evening after everyone’s activities are over. Throw on some comfy clothes, break out the snacks, and catch up on what’s going on with everyone in the family.
Invite Your Kids’ Friends Over
Although it’s not directly family time, inviting your kids’ friends over is a great way to feel more connected to your kids. There is no substitute for knowing your kids’ friends and their hobbies.
