3 Tips for Staying Hydrated with a Sauna

Saunas are meant to make you sweat. That’s a fact of life, and honestly the purpose of using a sauna. You sweat out the toxins, your muscles relax, and you get ready for a great night’s sleep. But if you’re sweating so much, you need to stay hydrated, just like your mom told you when you played outside as a kid. Here are 3 tips for staying hydrated with a sauna.

Drink Water Before Your Sauna Session

Yep, you guessed it — in order to stay hydrated with a sauna, you need to drink water. It’s super important to start drinking water before your sauna session, especially if you’re exercising beforehand. Ideally, you should drink at least 32 ounces, or one liter, of water before your sauna session. But, that 32 ounces doesn’t include any water you’ve had during your workout. So, drink however much you need during your workout. Then, before you head to the sauna, drink 32 ounces of water. Don’t worry about having to use the bathroom after drinking so much water; sauna sessions only last about 15-30 minutes. Instead, worry about what’s going to happen if you don’t drink water before your sauna session: you will become dehydrated.

Drink Water During Your Sauna Session

You may be asking yourself, “Is this going to be an entire blog telling me to drink water while using my sauna?” Maybe (yes). But drinking water is so important and the best way for you to stay hydrated with a sauna. It seems like common sense, but sometimes it’s just something you don’t think about. How many times have you used a public sauna and no one in there has had a water bottle with them?

Be different. Bring a water bottle with you during your sauna session. Drink the whole thing (ideally another 32 ounces) before your first round in the sauna is over. While you’re in the sauna, you’re not going to realize how much sweat you’re losing like you do when you work out. So just aim to drink all that water. Your body will thank you later.

Drink Water After Your Sauna Session

Believe it or not, you also need to drink water after your sauna session. Even if you drink water before your session, during your session, and in between rounds in the sauna, you could still be dehydrated when your sauna session is over. You sweat a lot more in there than you realize! In fact, you sweat so much that you actually burn calories during your sauna session. So just drink the water (yes, another 32 ounces) after your sauna session. You can add flavoring to it if you would like, but the important part is that you drink actual water, not soda and especially not alcohol. Those options will just dehydrate you more, and you need to stay hydrated! That’s why you’re here, isn’t it?
