3 Tips for Keeping Your Hot Tub Water in Balance

hot tub water in balance

One of the worst feelings in the world is getting all ready to get in your hot tub, then realizing you can’t because your hot tub water isn’t balanced. So you have to add chemicals and then wait until it’s safe to get in, and by then you may not even have time. How can you stop this from happening? Try these 3 tips for keeping your hot tub water in balance.

Test Your Hot Tub Water

We know. It sounds so simple. Testing your hot tub water will help you keep it balanced. Of course!

It may seem simple, but it’s important. You should be checking your hot tub water’s chemical balance at least two to three times per week. And you may need to check it more often depending on how much you use your hot tub. How many times have you realized you needed to check your hot tub’s water balance, then pushed it off to another day?

Every time you get in the hot tub, it affects your hot tub’s chemical balance. So, if you push testing your water off, you push balancing the water off, and your water ends up even more out of balance. It may be annoying, but test your water when you’re supposed to test it.

Rinse Off Before Getting In

When you go to a public pool or a hotel, you always see signs that say, “Shower/Rinse Off Before Getting in the Pool and Hot Tub”. You probably thought that’s just because it’s public and they don’t know if people are clean or not. That is the case, but not for the reason you think.

Any time you get in a pool or hot tub, anything you have on your body gets washed off. All of your natural body oils, deodorant, perfume, makeup, sunscreen … everything. Each of these has its own pH balance and affects the filters and chemical balance in the water. So if you get in your own hot tub without rinsing off first, your hot tub’s water balance will be affected.

This is not to say you should not wear sunscreen when in your hot tub. If your hot tub is outside, you should certainly wear sunscreen. It is absolutely worth affecting your hot tub’s water balance to protect your skin. But, you should rinse off and dry well before putting sunscreen on to get any other oils off of your body.
