3 Super Fast Ways to Ease After Workout Soreness

Getting back into a workout regimen after a long time of low physical activity can be rough. Most people don’t realize just how out of shape they are until they start to do some moderate workouts. If it’s been a few years since your last 5k and you’re trying to get back into the swing of things, you can expect some soreness. If you’ve been running you’ll feel it in your thighs and your calves. And if you hit the weights you’ll have that tight, burning feeling in your arms and chest.

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is the feeling that you get from stretching and working muscles that haven’t been asked to do much for a while. It will probably last about 24 hours and it’ll become less of an issue every time that you work out. So the best way to ensure that it won’t happen is to keep exercising. But there are a few things that you can do when you finish to relieve it or prevent it from getting very uncomfortable.

Post Exercise Pickle Juice

Believe it or not, a lot of bodybuilders swear that drinking a shot of pickle juice right after a workout is a miracle worker toward preventing DOMS. It works in the same manner that sports drinks do in that your electrolytes are being replaced. But the brine is a super concentrated source of sodium so you’re getting the benefit of an entire Gatorade with one shot.

Chill Out

Ice packs are a great way to soothe the effects of DOMS. They are especially useful if your soreness is in joints like your shoulders or your knees because that can be caused by inflammation and swelling. Putting ice on those areas will help to reduce swelling and return some mobility. If your gym provides you access to an ice bath that can help, too.

Hot Tub

One of the most effective ways to relieve soreness after working out is by soaking in hot water. What better way to do that than in a hot tub. The hot water is great for reducing inflammation. And you also have the benefit of the massaging jets. That can really provide some relief to those muscle groups that give you the most problems. Just let them work their magic to provide blood flow to the affected areas. A lot of people make the hot tub a regular part of their workout routine.
